The Happy Challenge – Cango Caves, Western Cape

The Cango Caves houses some of the biggest stalagmite formations in the world set in Precambrian (a time about 4500 million years ago) in limestone. A series of dripstone caverns that open into vast halls of towering stalagmite formations with names like ‘the bridal couple’, ‘glass flower fantasy’, ‘weird cango candle’ and ‘the hanging shawl’ can be found. Common myth has it that the Caves were first explored by a local farmer named Jacobus van Zyl (after who the first chamber, van Zyl’s Hall, was named). The caves are South Africa’s oldest tourist attraction….

How to get there?

Follow the R62 from Robertson in an earterly direction. The trip is approximately 292km / 3 hours, 30 minutes.

Things to do?

Choose the Adventure Tour at the caves which is a proper introduction to caving. The tour takes approximately 1 and a half hours and involves leopard crawling, squeezing through tight openings while knee deep in water. Sounds like fun right?! (Do not do this if you’re claustrophobic!)

Best place for your photo?

We dare you to take a photo in the Rainbow Chamber without your jaw dropping open. It really is a breathtaking sight : )
